Remanufacturing

As an environmentally conscious manufacturer, Plastic Technology is working to assist industry in the environmentally friendly recycling of plastic waste materials, helping the environment, reducing landfill, contributing to individual companies' abilities to meet their triple bottom line responsibilities and the national packaging covenant. Currently Plastic Technology saves more than 12,000 kg of plastic per day going to landfill. This material is remanufactured into industrial films, primarily builder's barrier films.

When it comes to the recycling and remanufacturing management process, the Plastic Technology solution provides a complete "end to end", "closed loop" offering. The key business proposition in the term recycling and remanufacturing is the word "remanufacturing" and not "recycling" as the waste management industry suggests.  Clients subscribe to a recycling and remanufacturing service in order to have their plastic recycled and then reused, closing the loop, and contributing to securing our future environment.

Accordingly, the Plastic Technology business model has been re-engineered to deliver an environmentally sound process from pick-up through to remanufacture and reuse. What makes the Plastic Technology model particularly practical is that in addition to saving 12,000 + kg’s (20 cubic meters) of plastic going to landfill, the resin produced from this waste plastic is remanufactured into new 100% recycled plastic products, primarily builders barrier films, significantly extending, and also completing the life of the plastic. Builders barrier films are used to hold back moisture under concrete slabs, and similar applications, were its practical non biodegradable use is particularly important.

The Plastic Technology Remanufacturing and Recycling Benefits

  • Waste minimisation: Plastic Technology uses waste plastics which previously went to landfill. Plastics are a fifth by volume of material from the domestic waste stream. Take out the plastics and life of landfills could be extended 20 percent.
  • Bans on plastics waste: Some governments are banning plastics in landfill; others are exporting waste plastics. Plastic Technology addresses new self regulated and legislative demands.
  • Plastics lasts: Plastics are the most intractable part of the waste stream, apart from hazardous waste. It takes from 5 – 5000 years to degrade – preserved in landfill. This attribute, which makes plastics a disaster in landfill, is a plus in Plastic Technology products.
  • Incinerating plastics is wasteful: Incinerating plastics for the calorific value, to produce energy, is a waste of a valuable resource - and when waste plastics are burnt they can be environmentally harmful.
  • Resource recovery: Plastic is a non-renewable natural resource, derived mainly from hydrocarbons (and like other fossil fuel these may take millions of years to regenerate). By 1987, 1 billion barrels of oil were used annually for plastics in USA. To dump waste plastics is non-sustainable and unacceptable.
  • Plastic Technology products save on precious resources: They can substitute for first use Virgin Grade materials.
  • People of the world want recycling: Surveys indicate strong support for recycling - even if it means extra effort on rubbish night. The community hates waste, hates the look of rubbish - and loves recycling. While application of plastics in manufacturing, packaging and retail remains fast growing, recycling rates are low and lethargic.
  • Plastic Technology advances plastics recycling: Because of the cost and inefficiency of traditional recycling methods, very little plastic has been recycled. Each year more virgin plastics are produced and more ends up in landfills and incinerators. Although plastics have been identified as the second most valuable recyclable commodity in the solid waste stream (after aluminium) the challenge is that it has been cheaper to dump than to recycle. With Plastic Technology all waste plastics can be used: it's simpler and it's cost effective.
  • Plastic Technology is new: Recycling is an industry for the future – growth will come from "smart management of remaining resources" and technologies which provide for long-term sustainability (Battelle Institute).
  • There are NO disadvantages. Plastic Technology products are commercially viable, environmentally friendly, serviceable and durable - and typically better for the job than traditional materials.

Plastic Technology has enjoyed strong industry support from end users of products… including manufacturing, logistics, primary producers and waste management companies. We continue to develop a range of commercially viable, environmentally friendly products that offer the benefits of resource recovery, resource saving, waste minimisation, reduced energy use, new products, new employment opportunities.
